Artsy-Fartsy on a Friday

Fridays are like red flags with "weekend" written all over it. We'd normally wind up with a movie, a catch up dinner or photo walk along Marina Bay. This time, the squad has decided to shake things up a bit and go to a festival instead.

Singapore kicks off this year's festival with its annual S'pore Night Fest. The event has 2 parts spreading in weekends of August 21 & 22 to August 28 & 29 from 07:00 pm to 2:00 am. Sporting Glitz & Glamour as the main theme, it spans from Armenian to Middle Road. Night Festival is on its 8th year and what better way to attract goers than co-joined with the Singapore Golden Jubilee festivities.

So on Friday, August 22nd with leaflets in hand, we tapped into our inner art dilettante and merged with the crowd eager to see the performances and exhibits lined up. The festival is divided into 5 zones.

Zone 1 : This is the main festival zone located at the National Muesum, surrounded in glitter, lights, music and art.

First on the list is Anooki - This features "the world's smallest inuits". No, they are not real people but were created under the brilliance of David Passegand and Moetu Batlle. I couldn't stop exclaiming " awww.. cutie!!!" making sure I take snapshots of them before they disappear. It's a 7-minute performance which runs on a 7-minute interval as well.

Garden of Angels - This is a MUST-SEE.And I couldn't emphasize that well enough. Watch in awe and literally stay amazed for 25 minutes as you witness aerial performance of dazzling angels, singers and dancers ( a total package ). The performance is flawless and stunning like they are straight out from a painting of Marc Chagall.

Le Desir Et La Menace - This a showcase of lighting techniques mixed with artistry. The display features 3 birds on a tree top which is a catchy array for photography.

Zone 2: Musical performances are spread across Armenian Street. Let the roving performance piqued your interest with their edgy and experimental take on music and light display.

Illuminate  - Housed inside the Peranakan Musuem. The exhibit features glow-in-the-dark outfits designed by students of Nanyang Academy - Fine Arts. We didn't get to see it up close, thanks to the endless queue.

Hanami - Bright lights of purple greeted us as we made our way to the Armenian Church grounds. It felt like we've been transported straight to Japan. The light installation was inspired by the beauty of cherry blossoms.

Embruns De Lune - I was looking forward to this but time did not permit. This is a 45-minute show with characters wandering around, popping to unsuspecting goers whispering a poem or a word of love. Sounds romantic!

Zone 3 : Situated at Cathay Green. This is for the eclectic mix of ticketed local performances.

Riot!
Kumar's Cabaret - Queen of Glamour
Lost Vegas
Fats kids are harder to kidnap.

Sounds fun but we're sort of saving time and yes, budget so the rest of the us decided to check the other performances instead.

Zone 4 : What is a festival without festival food and flea market right? Taking up SMU ( Singapore Management University ) grounds. At Festival Village, everyone can enjoy music, good food and yes a bit of shopping would be good too.

Zone 5 : With exhibits and performances spread across SAM ( Singapore Art Museum & Queen Street ).This sure is an art immersion of some sort.

Garden of Fire & Light - Watch breathtaking performances from Starlight Academy. Be in daze as you witness performers dance in fire and light.

Spark! - We saw them roving around Queen Street as we're about to make our way to National Design Museum. They look like walking Christmas Tree ( in human form of course )

Photo grabbed from Google

Fields in Bloom - soTa( School of the Arts ) steps are decorated with white blooms but don't ignore them just yet. The petals illuminate into different designs when struck by blue light.

Pixels - Watch your wold turn into Kaleidoscope as the giant light carpet changes color and form. This was our last stop and the night couldn't have ended any better with these amazing colors.

Art is an expression of our creative skills and imagination. It varies in form yet meant for a sole purpose - To be appreciated. The Night Festival is indeed more than just a celebration and showcase of the art. It gave us a glimpse of Singapore's uncharted charm and beauty -A nocturnal wonderland indeed.
